SISCOSOR: Computer system for the communication of deaf and hearing impaired people

Abstract: This system helps to learn sign language through mobile images, colour illustrations and simple definitions of the words to be studied. It stimulates deaf and hearing impaired people’s reading and writing, improves spelling, and acquaints them with the use of computer techniques.The system was used in the provincial School for Deaf Children ¨Eduardo Mesa Llul¨ of Santiago de Cuba. It received the Annual Prize for Socially Most Relevant Research, awarded by the Chancellor of the University of Oriente. This work also won a prize at the 5th Latin American Conference on Special Education held in Havana in 1996. An article on this computer system has been published. This work has been registered in the CENDA (National Copyright Centre).
