On April 15, 2019, Julio Vitelio Ruiz Hern\u00e1ndez, PhD, passed away. He was an outstanding linguist, one of the pioneers of acoustic and experimental phonetics studies in Cuba, the author of novel nationally popular spelling books and the founder of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA, Spanish acronym) of Santiago de Cuba. With his death, the physical existence of a scientific dyad that made great contributions to Cuban linguistics and pedagogy came to an end, because, along with his wife, Elo\u00edna Miyares Berm\u00fadez, also a linguist, he elaborated part of his vast work. This Academic of Merit of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba and Hero of Labour of the Republic of Cuba was the creator of the Center for Applied Linguistics and a pioneer of Acoustic and Experimental Phonetics studies in Cuba.<\/div>\r\n

Sixteenth International Symposium on Social Communication held in Santiago de Cuba<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n

The Sixteenth International Symposium on Social Communication, sponsored by the Center for Applied Linguistics, was held from January 21 to 25 this year, with the participation of 135 Cuban experts and 93 foreign experts from 20 countries.<\/p>\r\n

CLA staff donates blood on the occasion of May Day<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\"DSC_0214\"<\/a>In response to the call of the Provincial Union of Science Workers to get involved in anaction plan to observe May Day, the trade union branch of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA) embarked on a massive blood donation drive. This initiative proved to be fruitfulanda number ofunion members from CLA gathered on April 27 at the Blood Bank of our city to donate the precious fluid and contribute to saving human lives. These donations took place after another onemade recently by employee Yoandrys Cruz Pantoja, for a total of six. CLA congratulates founder and researcher Dr. Julio Vitelio Ruiz Hern\u00e1ndez on his 89th birthday<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\nThe staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA)gathered on April 28 at the house of the founder of this institution and researcher Dr. Julio Vitelio Ruiz Hern\u00e1ndez to congratulate him on his 89th birthday. Vitelio, as his colleagues affectionately call him, devoted his entire life and professional career together with his wife, Dr. Elo\u00edna Miyares Berm\u00fadez, to studying the Spanish language, and made significant contributions to Linguistics in the fields of Phonetics, Lexicology, Lexicography and Spelling. After his son Dr. Leonel Ruiz Miyares expressed congratulations, Vitelioreceived a beautiful bouquet of flowers on behalf of the staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics, as a token of eternal gratitude for his valuable scientific work. Young CLAstaff members participate in scientific exhibition on April 4<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\nYoung staff members from the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA) participated in an exhibition organized by the Territorial Divisionof CITMA (Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment) at the headquarters of MEGACEN (Information and Technology Management Center) to observe the anniversary of the Young Communist League on April 4. In the exhibition, Engineer Javier Tamayo Lozada and computer technician Rolando Urrutia Cleger launched the Diccionario Auditivo para Invidentes<\/em>(Audio Dictionary for Visually Impaired Persons), an important achievement of our institution that is being spread throughout the province and obtained good results in the Science and Technology Symposium in theprovince. Massive participation of CLA staff on May Day parade<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\"DSC_0229\"<\/a>On May Day, the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA)staffgathered at the Antonio Maceo Grajales Revolution Square in the city of Santiago de Cuba to reaffirm their unconditional supportfor the Revolution, the Communist Party of Cuba, Fidel and Ra\u00fal. The staff members carried Cuban flags, the National Outstanding Centerflag and posters featuring messages on May Day. In this colorful atmosphere, the CLA staff members were enthusiastic and joyful for they reached this significant date after having met their goals at work. Five staff members had also donated blood on previous days to mark the International Workers'Day. The five German students who are takinga Spanish Language and Cuban Culture coursejoined the CLA staff inthe parade to show their support for our Revolution and its work. Spanish Language and Cuban Culture Course 2017 Started<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\nA new round of the Spanish Language and Cuban Culture Course started on March 6, 2017 and will last until June. This course is held annually at the Center for Applied Linguistics of Santiago de Cuba. Five students from the University of W\u00fcrsburg, Germany have enrolled for the course this year.\r\n\r\nThe occasion will be fruitful for practicing and validating the new course on the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE, Spanish acronym), designed on a task-based approach resulting from one of the research projects developed at the Center and completed in 2016.\r\n\r\nApart from improving their knowledge of the Spanish language, students will be able to have a broad outlook of the Cuban culture, included history, art, music, etc. Visits to museums and other places of historical and cultural interest in Santiago de Cuba will also be part of the program.\r\n

CLA researchers held a new scientific session<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\r\nCLA researchers and technicians met on March 28 to discuss topics covered by the book El dardo en la Academia<\/em> by composite authors. On-the-job trainees Yamil Leyva and Rosmery Cernadas commented on the good and bad decisions related to the work traditionally developed by the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language.\r\n\r\nInformation technician Rolando Urrutia Cleger, a member of the CLA Group for Computational Linguistics, referred to the plan for updating the Web site of the Center for Applied Linguistics. Participants in the meeting highlighted the importance of this plan, as it reflects the scientific and social work of this center in a nicer and modern way.\r\n

An encounter with history<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\"IMG_20170316_150829\"<\/a>Employees of the Center for Applied Linguistics and their relatives visited Fidel\u00b4s house in Bir\u00e1n, in the province of Holgu\u00edn as well as the Mangos de Baragu\u00e1 Monument, located near Santiago de Cuba. It was an excellent occasion to pay homage to two outstanding figures of our history: Fidel Castro Ruz and Antonio Maceo Grajales who, in spite of belonging to two different periods, they were both characterized by their revolutionary principles and devotion to the homeland. Dictionary Marathon Contest on its Second Edition<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\r\n

\"8\"<\/a>The second edition of the Dictionary Marathon Contest <\/strong>organized by the Center for Applied Linguistics was celebrated at the \u201cAbel Santamar\u00eda Cuadrado\u201d semi boarding school during Spanish Language Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

The main objective of the competition is to test the student\u2019s skills to look for words in the dictionary. Students from 30 junior high schools of the municipality of Santiago de Cuba participated in the activity and the six best times were selected using a digital chronometer. Authorities of the Ministry of Education in the municipality and the province were present. Results obtain were very positive and stimulated more ambitious efforts for this practice next year. \"Brasilia\"<\/a>On November 2011, Doctor Leonel Ruiz Miyares was invited to give a Master Lecture on the occasion of the Second International Congress on Phraseology and Paramiology and the First Brazilian Congress on Phraseology, sponsored by the University of Brasilia, Brazil.<\/p>\r\n

The conferences were held from November 11 through 18 and were an excellent opportunity for this distinguished Cuban researcher to exchange with participants from other countries of the American continent on scientific results obtained by the Centre for Applied Linguistics. The Dictionary Marathon and Spelling Contests are some of the activities sponsored by the Centre for Applied Linguistics in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to promote the correct use of the Spanish language in primary schoolchildren. The Marathon mainly aims at training students in rapidly searching words in the dictionary. The first is entitled Desarrollo L\u00e9xico en Escolares de Primaria: Ejercicios para su Perfeccionamiento,<\/strong> and deals with a lexical and statistical analysis of written texts used by primary schoolchildren in the municipality of Guam\u00e1, province of Santiago de Cuba, and with a selection of educational exercises designed to improve language mastery among the said schoolchildren. Senior researchers from the Centre for Applied Linguistics Eloina Miyares Bermudez<\/strong> and Vitelio Ruiz Hernandez<\/strong> were granted the 2010 Work National Hero<\/strong> award. This award is a well-deserved recognition of the outstanding work carried out by these two researchers for the correct use of language.<\/p>\r\n

This octogenarian couple has been united by common professional interests and share experiences like their studies at the Oriente Teacher Training School<\/strong>, the foundation of the Centre for Applied Linguistics<\/strong> and the teaching of scientific courses to professionals from different specialties. Among the many books they have written based on studies jointly conducted by them outstand the Estudio del L\u00e9xico Activo Funcional del Escolar Cubano<\/strong>, awarded in 1987 by the Academy of Sciences of Cuba; the Vacuna Ortogr\u00e1fica Val-Cuba<\/strong>, and the Diccionario B\u00e1sico Escolar<\/strong>. A team headed by Doctor Leonel Ruiz Miyares was responsible for publishing the book, which is characterized mainly by a wider variety of definitions, concepts and senses. Sponsored by the Basque Government, the dictionary includes more and better language and didactic elements in relation to its first edition. \"\"<\/a>Last January, Doctor Sven Tarp, researcher from the Lexicography Centre of the University of Aarthus, Denmark, taught a five-day workshop on lexicography.<\/p>\r\n

The workshop dealt with the vast experience of the staff from the Lexicography Centre of the University of Aarthus in the creation of dictionaries, and included a lecture on the current trends in the creation of lexicographic books.<\/p>\r\n

Distinguished researchers Eloina Miyares Bermudez and Nancy Cristina Alamo Suarez were invited to participate in the Annual Academic and Cultural Week<\/strong> held at the Faculty of Colima, Mexico in 2007.<\/p>\r\n

In the conference, both researchers taught master lectures on the work developed in Cuba to favour enhancement of spelling in students, using methods that prevent and eradicate misspellings. They also taught a workshop course on the book Vacuna Ortogr\u00e1fica Val-Cuba<\/strong> by Doctor Vitelio Ruiz Hernandez and Senior Researcher Eloina Miyares Bermudez. \"\"<\/a>The Chancellor of the University of Oriente (UO) Doctor Zaida Valdes Estrada, at the proposal of the Faculty of Social and Humanistic Sciences, bestowed Senior Researcher Eloina Miyares Bermudez<\/strong> with an Honorary Degree in Social Sciences<\/strong> on October 18, 2006, in recognition of the commendable work she has carried out in teaching multiple generations of professionals and as a prestigious researcher.<\/p>\r\n

Doctor Eloina Miyares<\/strong> has taught and given lectures in uncountable postgraduate courses, workshops, and congresses. She has created methods<\/strong> to improve pronunciation in secondary and senior high school students, and supervised studies on the vocabulary of Cuban schoolchildren. She has led scientific projects resulting in the creation of the first school dictionaries produced in Cuba. She designed a modern form of spreading research results, i.e. the National Scientific Trailers. She initiated the International Symposia on Social Communication. These and other contributions have been made by this notable researcher who has also won uncountable awards and prizes, being some of the most important ones the National Prize in Pedagogy; the Carlos J. Finlay Order; the Frank Pais Garcia Order; the Lazaro Pe\u00f1a Grade One Order; the Cuban Culture Medal; and the National Prize awarded by the Academy of Science of Cuba (ACC).
