Mission and aims

From the date of creation, the CLA has worked in the development of linguistic research on the Cuban Spanish version, and has provided linguistic service. Its primary mission is to help increase language knowledge of the people, especially schoolchildren, through applied research with a high level of scientific rigor.

The Centre’s aim is to conduct specialized and interdisciplinary studies on the mother tongue to better understand its characteristics and trends so as to create scientific tools aimed at increasing language knowledge and enriching our people’s spiritual and cultural values.

These are some of the CLA’s fundamental objectives and activities:

  1. To develop research on the mother tongue in order to describe it, and better understand and use it.
  2. To prepare and implement agreements with Cuban and foreign institutions devoted to language studies, especially in the field of Applied Linguistics.
  3. To promote exchange and international scientific collaboration between institutions from all over the world, especially from the Caribbean, thereby contributing to unity and cultural identity in this geographical region.
  4. To provide scientific and technical service in the linguistic field, specifically in Applied Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, Lexicology, Lexicography, Morphosyntax, Text Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Spanish Language Teaching to Foreigners, and other specialties related to the study of language.
  5. To market products (books, methodologies, dictionaries, glossaries, computer software and systems, etc.)
  6. To promote and develop specialized postgraduate studies in Applied Linguistics.
  7. To boost the development of Computational Linguistics in Cuba.
  8. To contribute to the training of specialists and technicians who are qualified to conduct linguistic research.
  9. To promote scientific exchange among scholars through conferences, workshops, courses and other activities.
  10. To promote an optimal use of language in the media so that they become a model of good use of language, as a result of research in Applied Linguistics.
