Summary: This dictionary is compiled on the basis of the study entitled Functional Active Vocabulary of Cuban Schoolchildren (corpus: 700,000 words from 7,000 compositions from across Cuba). The dictionary is aimed at familiarizing second and fourth grade children with the use of this necessary and important pedagogical tool to develop their vocabulary. In entries, the letters that can make spelling tricky are highlighted in red to help students assimilate correct spelling patterns through visual perception.The dictionary comprises about 2,000 entries with simple definitions, which are easy to understand by children. It includes over 500 colour illustrations to help students learn the meaning of each word. The dictionary was published in 1998 by the Editorial Oriente of Santiago de Cuba and Ediciones Libertarias of Madrid, Spain. In 1998, the dictionary won an Outstanding Work award at the 12th National Science and Technology Symposium. Five scientific articles on the dictionary have been published in various journals.
