The Legacy of a Couple of Teachers

On April 15, 2019, Julio Vitelio Ruiz Hernández, PhD, passed away. He was an outstanding linguist, one of the pioneers of acoustic and experimental phonetics studies in Cuba, the author of novel nationally popular spelling books and the founder of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA, Spanish acronym) of Santiago de Cuba. With his death, the physical existence of a scientific dyad that made great contributions to Cuban linguistics and pedagogy came to an end, because, along with his wife, Eloína Miyares Bermúdez, also a linguist, he elaborated part of his vast work. The Sixteenth International Symposium on Social Communication, sponsored by the Center for Applied Linguistics, was held from January 21 to 25 this year, with the participation of 135 Cuban experts and 93 foreign experts from 20 countries.

The staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA)gathered on April 28 at the house of the founder of this institution and researcher Dr. Julio Vitelio Ruiz Hernández to congratulate him on his 89th birthday. Vitelio, as his colleagues affectionately call him, devoted his entire life and professional career together with his wife, Dr. Eloína Miyares Bermúdez, to studying the Spanish language, and made significant contributions to Linguistics in the fields of Phonetics, Lexicology, Lexicography and Spelling. After his son Dr. Leonel Ruiz Miyares expressed congratulations, Vitelioreceived a beautiful bouquet of flowers on behalf of the staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics, as a token of eternal gratitude for his valuable scientific work. Spanish Language and Cuban Culture Course 2017 Started
A new round of the Spanish Language and Cuban Culture Course started on March 6, 2017 and will last until June. This course is held annually at the Center for Applied Linguistics of Santiago de Cuba. Five students from the University of Würsburg, Germany have enrolled for the course this year. The occasion will be fruitful for practicing and validating the new course on the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE, Spanish acronym), designed on a task-based approach resulting from one of the research projects developed at the Center and completed in 2016. Apart from improving their knowledge of the Spanish language, students will be able to have a broad outlook of the Cuban culture, included history, art, music, etc. Visits to museums and other places of historical and cultural interest in Santiago de Cuba will also be part of the program.CLA researchers held a new scientific session
CLA researchers and technicians met on March 28 to discuss topics covered by the book El dardo en la Academia by composite authors. On-the-job trainees Yamil Leyva and Rosmery Cernadas commented on the good and bad decisions related to the work traditionally developed by the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language. Information technician Rolando Urrutia Cleger, a member of the CLA Group for Computational Linguistics, referred to the plan for updating the Web site of the Center for Applied Linguistics. Completion of a project on the intonation of the people from Santiago de Cuba carried out by the Center for Applied Linguistics
After seven years of implementation (2005-2012), the science and technique project named “Intonation in the speech of the educated population of Santiago de Cuba”, ended on May 2012 after the satisfactory fulfillment of its objectives. After 37 successful years of work (28 at the CLA) devoted to teaching and linguistic research, Nancy Álamo Suárez B.A. has decided to retire. She was always considered by her colleagues as an endless and model worker.
At her farewell party, on April 30, together with her family and friends, she was complimented for her achievements in her professional career, her merits in the formation of new generations, and her commitment as a political leader. Visibly touched by the signs of affection, the researcher expressed her decision to keep supporting the work of the institution that helped her develop high scientific and spiritual values. Read more
Dictionary Marathon Contest on its Second Edition
The second edition of the Dictionary Marathon Contest organized by the Center for Applied Linguistics was celebrated at the “Abel Santamaría Cuadrado” semi boarding school during Spanish Language Day.
The main objective of the competition is to test the student’s skills to look for words in the dictionary. Students from 30 junior high schools of the municipality of Santiago de Cuba participated in the activity and the six best times were selected using a digital chronometer. Authorities of the Ministry of Education in the municipality and the province were present. Results obtain were very positive and stimulated more ambitious efforts for this practice next year. The Center for Applied Linguistics organized on April 23, 2012 a Spelling and Culture Enhancement Session to celebrate Spanish Language Day at the Abel Santamaría Cuadrado semi boarding school. One of the main activities was the Spelling Contest carried out every year on this date and led by Dr. Eloína Miyares and Dr. Vitelio Ruiz. Other activities included the recording of new emissions of the Saber Andar radio program, written by the previously mentioned professionals and broadcast by local stations. This time the program included a group of cultural expressions written by students who showed their knowledge of the countries of Our Americas, specially those parts of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA). Director of the Center for Applied Linguistics gives a lecture in Vienna

Dr. Leonel Ruiz Miyares, Director of the Center for Applied Linguistics, gave a lecture in the Academy of Sciences of Austria on the dictionaries created in the institution. The lecture was part of the activities during his visit to the Semantic Technology Institute (STI) of the University of Innsbruck in Austria. The Director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics Participates in Important Phraseology and Lexicography Conferences
On November 2011, Doctor Leonel Ruiz Miyares was invited to give a Master Lecture on the occasion of the Second International Congress on Phraseology and Paramiology and the First Brazilian Congress on Phraseology, sponsored by the University of Brasilia, Brazil.
The conferences were held from November 11 through 18 and were an excellent opportunity for this distinguished Cuban researcher to exchange with participants from other countries of the American continent on scientific results obtained by the Centre for Applied Linguistics. Once again, the outstanding contributions of this Cuban centre to the development of Spanish Phraseology and Lexicography was revealed.Read more
Philosophy Doctor in Technical Sciences Leonel Ruiz Miyares, director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics, was invited to be part of the Examining Committee for the Doctoral Defence of Nora Barroso Moreno, from the University of the Basque Country, San Sebastian, Spain.
Barroso Moreno’s thesis was supervised by Karmele Lopez de Ipiña, PhD., and was entitled “Aportación a la gestión semántica de audio en entornos complejos” (A Contribution to the Semantic Management of Sound in Complex Environments). Read more
The Dictionary Marathon and Spelling Contests are some of the activities sponsored by the Centre for Applied Linguistics in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to promote the correct use of the Spanish language in primary schoolchildren. The Marathon mainly aims at training students in rapidly searching words in the dictionary. To achieve this, individual search is timed using a digital chronometer so as to determine the students´ speed level. Read more
The Centre for Applied Linguistics Launches Two New Books
The Centre for Applied Linguistics launched two new books in the Santiago municipality of Songo-La Maya on October 2011. The first is entitled Desarrollo Léxico en Escolares de Primaria: Ejercicios para su Perfeccionamiento, and deals with a lexical and statistical analysis of written texts used by primary schoolchildren in the municipality of Guamá, province of Santiago de Cuba, and with a selection of educational exercises designed to improve language mastery among the said schoolchildren. Its author, Philosophy Doctor in Philology Celia Maria Perez Marques, headed a team made up by Mileidis Quintana Polanco, MSc. and Leonel Ruiz Miyares, PhD., among others. Read more

As part of these relations, a paper entitled La segunda y tercera ediciones del Diccionario Básico Escolar (Second and Third Editions of the Diccionario Básico Escolar) by Eloina Miyares Bermudez, Xabier Artola Zubillaga, Iñaki Alegría Loinaz, Xabier Arregi Iparragirre, Leonel Ruis Miyares, Cristina Alamo Suarez and Celia Perez Marques was given at the 14th International Congress on Lexicography (EURALEX-2010). Senior researchers from the Centre for Applied Linguistics Eloina Miyares Bermudez and Vitelio Ruiz Hernandez were granted the 2010 Work National Hero award. This award is a well-deserved recognition of the outstanding work carried out by these two researchers for the correct use of language.
This octogenarian couple has been united by common professional interests and share experiences like their studies at the Oriente Teacher Training School, the foundation of the Centre for Applied Linguistics and the teaching of scientific courses to professionals from different specialties. Among the many books they have written based on studies jointly conducted by them outstand the Estudio del Léxico Activo Funcional del Escolar Cubano, awarded in 1987 by the Academy of Sciences of Cuba; the Vacuna Ortográfica Val-Cuba, and the Diccionario Básico Escolar. These and other important work results perfectly back up the award granted to these important figures from the Cuban culture. (May 2010)
The Centre for Applied Linguistics (CLA) was visited on April 2010 by Doctor Lina Dominguez, Cuban Vice-Minister of Sciences, Technology and Environment.
During the meeting with CLA’s directives and researchers, the Vice-Minister evaluated the progress of projects being conducted by this scientific institution, and the preparations for the 12th International Symposium on Social Communication, a conference having a high profile at national and international levels and that is scheduled to take place in January 2011. The Vice- Minister also had an exchange with young researchers that recently joined the centre’s staff. Read more
Doctors Xavier Artola and Xavier Arregi, academics and researchers from the University of the Basque Country visited the Centre for Applied Linguistics (CLA) of Santiago de Cuba from February to March 2010.
During their stay in the country, the two Basque specialists and members of the CLA worked in the preparation of the Base de Datos Léxica del Español de Cuba and established new cooperation projects. Read more
The second edition of the Diccionario Básico Escolar was launched in the year 2008 by a lexicographic team headed, once again, by Senior Researcher and Honorary Doctor Eloina Miyares Bermudez. A team headed by Doctor Leonel Ruiz Miyares was responsible for publishing the book, which is characterized mainly by a wider variety of definitions, concepts and senses. Sponsored by the Basque Government, the dictionary includes more and better language and didactic elements in relation to its first edition. Doctor Adria Gell Labañino, academic from the Frank Pais Garcia Pedagogical University, presided over the launching held at the Salon de los Vitrales of the Revolution Square in Santiago de Cuba. Last January, Doctor Sven Tarp, researcher from the Lexicography Centre of the University of Aarthus, Denmark, taught a five-day workshop on lexicography.
The workshop dealt with the vast experience of the staff from the Lexicography Centre of the University of Aarthus in the creation of dictionaries, and included a lecture on the current trends in the creation of lexicographic books.
In return, the outstanding specialist knew more about dictionaries produced by the Centre for Applied Linguistics, their characteristics and all data related to their publication and distribution nationwide through the so-called scientific trailers. (January 2010).
Doctor Leonel Ruiz Miyares was invited in 2009 to teach a cycle of lectures as part of the Master’s Course in Natural Language Processing held at the University of France-Comté, Besançon, France.
The cycle of lectures was developed from February 12 to May 9 that year and Doctor Ruiz Miyares’s invitation constituted a recognition to the work he, and especially the Centre for Applied Linguistics, have carried out in favour of the development of this specialty in Cuba. This exchange also contributed to strengthen the professional and scientific cooperation relations among colleagues from these two nations. Read more
Distinguished researchers Eloina Miyares Bermudez and Nancy Cristina Alamo Suarez were invited to participate in the Annual Academic and Cultural Week held at the Faculty of Colima, Mexico in 2007.
In the conference, both researchers taught master lectures on the work developed in Cuba to favour enhancement of spelling in students, using methods that prevent and eradicate misspellings. They also taught a workshop course on the book Vacuna Ortográfica Val-Cuba by Doctor Vitelio Ruiz Hernandez and Senior Researcher Eloina Miyares Bermudez. These Cuban researchers being invited to this conference evidence the prestige Cuba has gained in the field of language and pedagogical research and has contribute to strengthen the scientific cooperation ties existing between the Cuban and Mexican institutions. Otorgan Doctorado Honoris Causa a relevante investigadora del Centro de Lingüística Aplicada
The Chancellor of the University of Oriente (UO) Doctor Zaida Valdes Estrada, at the proposal of the Faculty of Social and Humanistic Sciences, bestowed Senior Researcher Eloina Miyares Bermudez with an Honorary Degree in Social Sciences on October 18, 2006, in recognition of the commendable work she has carried out in teaching multiple generations of professionals and as a prestigious researcher.
Doctor Eloina Miyares has taught and given lectures in uncountable postgraduate courses, workshops, and congresses. She has created methods to improve pronunciation in secondary and senior high school students, and supervised studies on the vocabulary of Cuban schoolchildren. She has led scientific projects resulting in the creation of the first school dictionaries produced in Cuba. She designed a modern form of spreading research results, i.e. the National Scientific Trailers. She initiated the International Symposia on Social Communication. These and other contributions have been made by this notable researcher who has also won uncountable awards and prizes, being some of the most important ones the National Prize in Pedagogy; the Carlos J. Finlay Order; the Frank Pais Garcia Order; the Lazaro Peña Grade One Order; the Cuban Culture Medal; and the National Prize awarded by the Academy of Science of Cuba (ACC). Read more
