Philosophy Doctor in Technical Sciences Leonel Ruiz Miyares, director of the Centre for Applied Linguistics, was invited to be part of the Examining Committee for the Doctoral Defence of Nora Barroso Moreno, from the University of the Basque Country, San Sebastian, Spain.
Barroso Moreno’s thesis was supervised by Karmele Lopez de Ipiña, PhD., and was entitled “Aportación a la gestión semántica de audio en entornos complejos” (A Contribution to the Semantic Management of Sound in Complex Environments).
Mr. Miyares’ participation means recognition of the high level achieved in Cuba in the development of Natural Language Processing and, specially, a recognition of the work carried out by the Centre for Applied Linguistics in promoting this area of research. This is one of the last joint projects conducted by the Centre for Applied Linguistics and the University of the Basque Country. Both institutions had previously worked in important projects like the Diccionario Básico Escolar and the training of researchers in the preparation and edition of electronic dictionaries, among others.
