CLA holds Comprehensive Spelling Contest and Basic School Dictionary Marathon tomark the Language Day

The staff of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA) celebrated on April 25, as usual, theSpanish Language Day at the Abel Santamaría Cuadrado boarding school, in El Caney. Seventh and ninth gradestudents participated in the celebrations and showed their mastery of the Spanish language. The seventh graders competed in spelling.The panel of judges was chaired by Dr. Alex Muñoz Alvarado. Student Daniel Alejandro González Guzmán from the José Luis Tasende Secondary School finished first;Daliana González López from the Rubén Bravo Álvarez Secondary School took the second place; and Karen Gallardo Capó from the Alberto Fernández Montes de Oca Secondary School finished third. In addition, honorable mention recognition went to students Yilianne García Martínez and Malena Boijoly Osorio from the Roberto Rodríguez and the Omar Girón schools, respectively.

The panel of judgesof the Basic School Dictionary Marathon was presided over by Mileidis Quintana Polanco, MSc. The marathon winners wereninth graders Leidis Santiesteban Frómeta, from the Roberto Rodríguez Secondary School and Marian Gallardo Capó, from the Alberto Fernández Secondary School. They tied for first place, with a dictionary look-up time of 13.2 seconds, and Arleen Candebat Castellanos from the Rubén Bravo Secondary School finished second, with 15.8 seconds. Eighth grade student Kevin Otero Valls from the Fe del Valle High Schoolreceived honorable mention. (April 25, 2017)
